“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 (NKJV)
In whatever circumstance we find ourselves—alarming reports on the nightly news, distressing physical problems, or the daily bumps and bruises of life in this imperfect world—Jesus tells us to “be of good cheer.” The world may trouble us, but we can take heart. Why? Because Jesus has overcome the world. Our source of joy is always this: Christ is victorious over the world, the flesh, and the devil. That is the fountain of our happiness in this world.
This world may get you down. You may be constantly wrestling against the devil. Your emotions may be weary from dealing with difficult relationships. Your flesh may feel the crunch of older age or illness. But be encouraged by these words from the beloved disciple John: “Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4). Take a moment to consider and savor all that Christ has accomplished for you—now and forever.
Stretch my faith, dear Lord, to be of good cheer in this dark, unhappy world. When people see genuine, unfeigned optimism and a hopeful heart, they can’t quite make sense of it or figure it out. I want to be Your ambassador just by staying encouraged, keeping my spirit bright, and maintaining a thankful heart.
