Eternal Glory

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.
2 Corinthians 4:17 |
On that bright eternal day when heaven’s rewards are distributed at last, we will be stunned to see the vast and endless gains before us. Today’s Scripture tells us our light and momentary affliction is accruing for us an eternal gain that far outweighs the inconvenience of earth’s hardships. And when God says “far,” he means far. Compared to heaven—our worst earthly pains will seem like a mere nuisance. When we stand amazed at the mountain ranges of joy and pleasures our response to suffering won for us, we will smack our foreheads, lamenting, “Why, oh, why didn’t I trust God more?!”
Saint Sebastian, an early Christian martyr, wisely observed, “When it is all over, you will not regret having suffered; rather you will regret having suffered so little and suffered that little so badly.” Such thoughts seem impossible to grasp when you’re feeling demoralized by deep trials, but with God, all things are possible.
Lord, I’m reminded that Your Word urges, “Set your sights on the rich treasures and joys of heaven” (Colossians 3:1, LB). Be the lifter of my head today. Help me to fix my gaze beyond the troubles, disappointments, and heartaches of my current circumstances to the beauty and rewards and never-ending joys of the life to come. |
