Valentine’s Day will have come and gone by the time I get this posted, but hopefully the reason for it will carry on through the rest of the year. If we look past all the hearts, balloons, flowers and valentine cards, maybe we can see the real meaning of what we are celebrating…Love.
For those without a partner or significant other, the day probably seemed lonely and without much purpose. Maybe if we look at it from a different prospective…Love as not only romantic…with feelings that sometimes come and go, but love as a choice we make, a decision to care. If we can celebrate that, instead of feeling left out and left behind, perhaps we can find reason to celebrate.
The two highest powers in the world are love and hate…and they are in constant conflict. God IS love…so who better than He can teach us what love means? When the world rejected Him, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to teach us the true meaning of love and to show us how far He was willing to go in order to prove that love to us.
Jesus, being a part of God, knew His Father’s plan…not to condemn the world for all the bad things we’ve done, but that we, through our faith in Him, might be saved. His death on the cross, as payment for our sins proved the words He spoke in John 15:12-13 “This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
Even if we found ourselves alone or received no hearts or flowers on this Valentine’s Day, we still have reason to celebrate…as we do everyday! Let us remember James 1: 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
