Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!

Jesus said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” – Matthew 9:37-38

The “Mayday” distress call was originated in 1921, by a senior radio officer in London. The officer was asked to think of a word that would indicate distress and would easily be understood by all pilots and ground staff in an emergency. He proposed the expression “Mayday” from the French m’aider (‘help me’), a shortened form of venez m’aider (‘come and help me’).

Convention requires the word be repeated three times in a row during the initial emergency declaration to prevent it being mistaken for some similar sounding phrase under noisy conditions.*

Distress call! Help me! Come and help me!

How many “Maydays” are being shouted out today from people who are confused, have no hope, and need help in navigating life crises?
