From WGN TV WEATHERMAN Tom Skilling!

FIRE HAS REACHED SOME OF CALIFORNIA’S FAMED SEQUOIA TREES –AMONG THE OLDEST TREES ON EARTH, SOME DATING BACK AS MUCH AS 2,500 YEARS AND UP TO 300 FT. TALL–AND WESTERN FIRE WOES EXTEND FAR BEYOND THE GOLDEN STATE ACROSS SECTIONS OF 12 NEIGHBORING STATES….WE’RE SOON TO SEE THE SMOKE HERE IN CHICAGO AND THE MIDWEST AS WELL….
The sequoias pre-date the birth of Christ. Early reports indicate park facilities, including building and campgrounds in Big Basin State Park–home to some of the mammoth trees have been severely damaged if not destroyed. https://www.livescience.com/will-california-redwoods-survive-wildfires.html
The sequoias are but one of the victim ACROSS THE WEST, a region across which blazes rage. Huge sections of the region has been burning the better part of August, a period which has seen well over 140 new record high temps.
The fires have filled the air with choking, health-threatening smoke laced with particulates and aerosols known to threaten health. The smoke worsens heart disease, is a horrendous challenge for those with asthma and can lead to cancer in the vulnerable.
Smoke is to arrive at high altitudes across Midwest skies in coming days. We’ll not smell the smoke here, but our sunrises and sunsets take on hues of orange and red as particulates in the smoke screen out the “blues” in the sunlight resulting in an orange and red coloration. You can follow the smoke’s predicted spread in this animation off the National Weather Service’s “HRRR-model”: https://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/hrrr/HRRRsmoke/jsloopLocalDiskDateDomainZipTZA.cgi?dsKeys=hrrr_smoke_jet:&runTime=2020082218&plotName=trc1_int&fcstInc=60&numFcsts=49&model=hrrr&ptitle=HRRR-Smoke%20Model%20Fields%20-%20Experimental&maxFcstLen=48&fcstStrLen=-1&resizePlot=1&domain=full
The magnitude of the fire tragedy is gripping.  Fires are burning across 13 states–92 of the blazes are characterized as “large”—and virtually all have been sparked by an estimated 11,000 lightning strikes which ignite fires which spread rapidly in bone dry vegetation baked by weeks of record heat. Six are dead as a result of the blazes; there have been 100,000 evacuations; 1.5-million acres have burned and a weary army of 24,000 overtaxed wildland firefighters and support staff has performed yeoman service in attempting to battle and limit the spread of the flames.
In California alone, 700,000 acres have been charred and fires which have grown so wildly that they have achieved the dubious distinction of being the state’s 2nd and 3rd largest fires. They continue to burn out of control and are being referred to as the LNU Lightning Complex fire, an amalgam of blazes covering an area of 314,000 acres around the Napa Valley taking in Santa Clara, Alameda, Stanislaus, Contra Costa and San Joaquin counties, and the SCU Lightning Complex fire which has decimated 63,000 acres in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties.
Statewide in California alone 560 blazes burned Saturday—two dozen of then considered “major”.  And officials warn the dire situation is far from over. A new lightning risk faces the region before the weekend is out.
Also hanging on but not out of the woods is California’s historic 133 year old Lick Observatory. Fire fighters have been positioned there and have prevented damage up to this point–the the risk of damage persists: https://www.space.com/california-wildfires-threaten-lick-observatory.html?utm_source=notification

Gracious Father, California burns again, and we desperately need You to act on behalf of panic stricken people. Please be the protector of life in these dreadful seasons of life.   I thank You LORD, that You have chosen and gifted people who behave in life as our first responders; these being firemen, policemen, medical helpers of every specialty. Please give them much supernatural courage and protection in their courage. Calm their hearts so that they may function as they have been trained to the best of their abilities.

I ask that You might give favor to those whose homes are in harm’s way. It would be a glorious act if You would save homes along with the many people. And, Father, my heart goes out to all the children. They will have more than enough fear of their own without also taking on the panic of their parents and other adults.   We rest in Your divine loving care, In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Thank you Pastor Jerry, we love you so very much!

We are so very thankful for Pastor Richard Mansfield of New Beginnings Church in Albuquerque for leading us in prayer for California. So much of the state is on fire and so many people are without power. This morning I am praying and weeping over California, we have family and friends there. Sharon’s Mom and Brother and Sister and their families live in Elk Grove which is next door to Sacramento.
Prayer for California
Lord, as we hear the news that there are nine severe wildfires in California and now that over a million people are without power, our hearts break for all of those affected by this horrible tragedy. Wrap Your loving arms around all those affected by the fires: Families, Individuals, Firefighters, First Responders and Rescue Workers. Give the firefighters favorable weather as they fight the fires. Protect them and the homeowners as they secure their homes and evacuate their properties and businesses. Reassure everyone of Your peace, power and presence as they process their pain and emotions. We pray that there not be any loss of life and that people will be able to return to their homes quickly along with their electrical power. Give wisdom and direction to the leaders directing the firefighters and the First Responders. We pray these and many more things in Jesus name, Amen
