Cool Snow

“Like the coolness of snow at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the spirit of his masters.”
Proverbs 25:13 |
It would happen on occasion. The harvest in Palestine would be accompanied by a refreshing snow to ease the workers in the field. The earth and grain, baked brown and hard by the summer sun, would be cooled by a soft layer of snow—not enough to ruin the crop, apparently, but just enough to make the task less burdensome.
Trustworthy messengers are like that snow, says Solomon. While today we barely give much thought to the trustworthiness of our messengers, it was not so simple in those days. A lot rode on the trustworthiness of the messenger. Would he deliver the message on time? Would he deliver the message accurately? Would he embellish or omit? Would he even conspire with the recipient and betray his master?
What does the Lord think today of those with whom he has entrusted his message? If we speak of God’s hope, do our voices reflect the certainty of that hope? If we speak of God’s love, do we betray any doubts? If we speak of his salvation, do we make the pathway clear? God desires trustworthiness in our handling of his gospel. Not only must our words reflect his message; our lives must reflect his character.
God’s Spirit is refreshed daily by faithful messengers. What message are you delivering today to those around you? Will they know there is hope for tomorrow? Will they know God loves them? Will they know the way of salvation? The harvesting of souls is a long and arduous task. Your trustworthiness will be a refreshment to the Lord of the harvest and to others as well. Let it snow.
Do you trust me, Lord, to deliver your message? Is your truth and your love clear to those around me? Make it so in my life, Lord. I seek to be a refreshment to your Spirit. |
