In the Bible, the word character is from a root word which means “To scratch, engrave, or to cut into furrows.” Wow. It means if you long to be made more like Christ and have his character, then trials will cut deep furrows into your soul. Romans 5 states it plainly, “We also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character [produces] hope.” Proven character that reveals a likeness of Christ is cut and plowed, scratched and sculpted in you until you glow with the loveliness of your Savior. So today, do not reject the trials which God sends your way. That trial is a plow that turns up the soil of your soul, laying it bear to receive the seed of God’s truth. Persevere and your character will prove the reality of Christ in your life. Not only to you, but to everyone around you.
