They say that suffering is having what you don’t want and wanting what you don’t have. If that’s true, then how can you find contentment? Well, here’s how: start by cutting back on things you desire. Jeremiah Burroughs wrote, “Contentment comes when there is an evenness between our hearts and our circumstances.” In other words, equalize your wants so that they better conform to your life situation. And it works! When I learned to subdue my desire to be on my feet, I gained a greater desire for Christ. Friend, saying “no” to your desires fosters contented feelings. So, do the hard work of curbing your wish-list to match your circumstances. Learn to cut back on things you want, and you will be richly rewarded. After all, 1 Timothy 6:6 assures you that “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” And I mean, great!
