We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:6
I recently told an acquaintance how much I was enjoying reading the Old Testament. But she replied, “You know, there’s too much shame and guilt in the Old Testament. I’d rather read about Christ in the New Testament.” Her comment stunned me. Because if you don’t understand what sin is and the guilt it fosters; if you cannot accept the gravity of sin and how wicked it is in the sight of God; if you do not experience shame from wrongdoing, you are never going to understand Jesus and his mission. He came to save us from sin, and all the guilt that goes with it. But if we ignore the weightiness of sin, we diminish the weight of Jesus’ sacrifice. And the best place to grasp how much God disdains sin is in the Old Testament. So learn to appreciate Old Testament truth for it beautifies the wonderful mission of Jesus and glorifies his work on the cross!
