I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
John 16:33
As Ken and I reflected over the past year, we listed various ailments I’ve wrestled through: increasing pain, aging in a wheelchair, a continuing battle against cancer, a nasty bout against COVID. And Jesus was right when he said, “In this world you will have trouble.” Yes, Jesus promises that the Christian life will be filled with trouble. And G.K. Chesterton put it this way; he said, “Jesus promised his disciples three things that they would be completely fearless, absurdly happy and in constant trouble.” But there’s more to the story. For John 16:33 also includes these powerful words from our Savior; he says, “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” Praise God, Jesus gives you his overcoming grace for every trial! So whatever troubles the world is throwing at you, take heart. Jesus has already conquered them.
