My pain and paralysis often make it hard for me to get to sleep. Last night I remembered, though, Proverbs 18:10: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” You know, that inspired me to recall all the many names of Jesus. As I breathed in I whispered, “Lord Jesus Christ,” and as I exhaled I repeated, “You are the Lamb of God.” Then again, “Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Bread of Life.” And then, “You are the Living Water.” And then, “You are the Narrow Way.” I kept this up, making the many names of my Lord my refuge. And soon I was asleep. Friend, how do you make the name of the Lord your hiding place? Well, in the night, let him be your Bright and Morning Star. When you’re lost, let him be your Shepherd. For every need, there is a corresponding name of God to soothe and save you from despair.
