Ann, a busy housewife raising two rowdy boys, looked out at the snow-filled street and sighed. The blizzard had left most of the roads snow-covered and impossible to travel on. The sound of a snow plow had brought her to the window. She watched as the plow made a quick swipe at the snow just short of her driveway…then the vehicle took off down the road. What was that about, she wondered. The pastor’s wife surely won’t be coming today, Ann thought. Another day with so many unanswered questions…
Ann and her family had attended a small church several Sundays in a row and last Sunday the Pastor’s wife had asked if she could come by today and visit. Then the blizzard had hit and things were at a standstill. Maybe, Ann thought, God didn’t want them attending that church after all.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, the Pastor’s wife was looking out her own window. Should she call Ann and cancel their meeting for today? She felt like God had laid it on her heart to visit the young family that had been coming to the services the last few weeks. “Lord, she prayed, “if it be thy will that I take a chance on these roads to go and visit this family, would you please prepare the way?”
A while later, Ann heard a knock on her door. She saw it was the Pastor’s wife and quickly ushered her inside. Her name was Beth, and she was laughing as she entered. Ann offered her some hot tea and they settled down for a great meeting. All her questions were answered and after a brief prayer, Beth got up to leave. ” Before I go,” she said, “I have to tell you, I hesitated to come with all this snow. I prayed and asked God, that if this meeting was His will, to prepare the way. When I arrived,I saw your driveway covered with snow, then right in front of your house, there was a small patch that had been plowed…no other part of the street had been cleared except right in front of your house where I could park my car!
This true story was told to me by my next-door neighbor following the blizzard of 1978 in Indiana. What a great reminder of how God answers our prayers and provides the answers we need when deciding to follow Him. When we are willing to serve, He goes before us and prepares a way.
1 Corinthians 2: 9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
