Most of us, no doubt, have heard the phrase: “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” How many times have we witnessed things happen that we could have never imagined because it seemed impossible? We have all been inspired by the will of the Ukrainian people and especially their President this week. Everyone, especially Putin, expected it to be an easy task to take over this country and have control…but the will and strength plus determination to fight, have made that goal a lot harder to achieve…hopefully it will prove impossible.
Looking back at all the war stories in the Old Testament, we find many instances where the enemy was defeated…not by the will of the people, but because of the will of God. Who do we think is in charge every time the impossible happens and evil is overcome? Not the political leaders in charge of their soldiers, but the God of our universe who wants only truth and freedom for His people. David was aware of this truth when he faced the giant, Goliath. “Who,” David asked, “is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
This giant was taken down by one little stone, cast by David …and powered by the will of God. In other stories, we see the enemy defeated only when the people keep their eyes on God and not on the stature of the enemies being fought. There are stories of armies comprised of only a few hundred men overcoming others made up of thousands. Only with God’s help and the power of His will, these armies were defeated and peace restored. A small army of men, lead by God, caused the walls of Jericho to come tumbling down… with one well-directed shout. Nothing is impossible for the will of God to overcome and defeat.
The same is true in our personal lives as we fight the enemies of sin and disease, be it cancer, a deadly virus, dishonest leaders, poverty, hate and riots in the street. All these enemies can be brought down and defeated by putting our faith in the power of the only living God, Jesus Christ.
As the eyes of the world are on the country of Ukraine, and with all of God’s children praying, may we see the enemy defeated and the power of faith in God displayed. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Jesus said,” I am the way, the truth, and the life… no man cometh unto the Father but by me. John 14: 6
