The Quality of Words

John 1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2 The same was in the beginning with God.  3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.

John 1: 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father.) full of grace and truth.

In John’s book of the gospel, he concentrates mostly on Jesus’ spiritual side and how they came to know Him as the Son of God…and how we can get to know Him as well.  Jesus was the Word of God, sent to us in human form, yet filled with the spirit of God Himself.  The words Jesus spoke are written in red throughout the New Testament and every one of them serve the purpose of his ministry:  To see that each of us hear and are given the chance to accept their truth and have access to God the Father.

Words are important, and need to be chosen carefully and spoken wisely.  This thought came to me a few days ago: The quality of our life is determined by the quality of the words we speak.  Words spoken too quickly or in anger often bring hurt feelings and misunderstandings that take time to overcome.  Not speaking up at the right time, can cause troubles later on.

For too long the church remained silent, and now we are paying the consequences.  Many voices crying in the wilderness carries the good news faster and to many more ears than just one.  Let us always seek God’s guidance as to when and where to speak…and for the right words to use. Proverbs 25: 11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.

The effects of words are seen often in people who have been mistreated or made to feel less than they are by hateful words meant to keep them in line. Col. 3: 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

There’s an old saying: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.  How untrue this statement has been proven may times.  Injuries caused by sticks and stones can heal, but sometimes the hurt caused by our words can cripple a person for life.

On the other hand, kind words spoken at the right time can change a life for the better.  The best words people can hear from us is the truth which comes straight from God’s Word:  For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him, might be saved. John 3:17

For a better quality of life, may we speak better quality of words.
