Pentecost Sunday! What is Pentecost and Where Did it Come From?

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday! Listen to the audio of Billy Graham from the 1957.  Billy paints a clear picture as to why America is failing. Billy shares about Pentecost. I was just 1 years-old when Billy spoke these words. Give me some of that ‘old time religion.’ Most of the Church in America falls so very short of the days of Billy. Too much Hollywood, not enough JESUS! Not enough full gospel preachers! Too much performance driven preachers seeking stardom, too much ego! EGO stands for edging out God! Billy said this, “The prophets who spoke to their generations for God did not please and conform, they opposed anything that did not honor the Lord.” That is missing in the pulpit of many Churches in America. The Church, as a whole, has become like the world!

Dr. Ray Pritchard

On Pentecost Sunday, the Holy Spirit filled the Church with power and added 3,000 new believers. The account in Act 2 reports that, after Jesus ascended into heaven, Jesus’ followers were gathered together for the Feast of Harvest (aka Pentecost), and the Holy Spirit “filled the whole house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2). “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:4).

If you go back and read the Old Testament, you will discover that Pentecost was one of the Jewish feast days. Only they didn’t call it Pentecost. That’s the Greek name. The Jews called it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks. It is mentioned five places in the first five books — in Exodus 23Exodus 24Leviticus 16Numbers 28, and Deuteronomy 16.
