Courage by Ethel Maharg
I’ve been asked what I think about Mark Ronchetti’s proposal for a constitutional amendment that would put abortion on the ballot and the people would decide.
This is not new, in fact Larry Marker who is a write in candidate for Public Land Commissioner attempted to put forth a referendum that would have put abortion on the ballot this election season. Unfortunately, Maggie Toulouse Oliver stood in his way sending it to the Supreme Court where they sided with her, and it is still up in the air today.
This amendment would take it out of Mark’s hands and give it to the people absolving him of any responsibility should it not go well, and he would be off the hook. This isn’t leadership.
What I’m going to say next applies not just to Mark but so many currently serving candidates, and I’m certain it will not sit well with many, but that has never been my concern. I have never been politically correct, so why start now? In the last 2 months we spent it chasing down currently serving candidates (not all) who say they are pro-life and even have voting records to prove it, but they would not fill out our questionnaire. Some flat refused. I was told they were directed not to. I continue to ask myself, what is it with sitting legislators that causes them to believe they are absolved from taking a stand?
By contrast those who have never served (again not all) got them to me with lightning speed. They are bold and steadfast in their stand for life, and I understand that they also got the memo. As you know when I ran for office there was no question in anyone’s mind where I stood and made no apologies for it. I filled out more questionnaires than I care to remember without a thought as to who it would offend. It is where I stand period. I do not understand the continual compromise thinking that it will help you to win. I can’t tell you how many times I heard that they weren’t going to mention life because they wanted to win. This has left me without words and for those who know me know, this doesn’t happen often.
A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Texas Alliance for Life and there was a picture of Governor Greg Abbott signing the ban on abortion bill, surrounded by an army of people. The article quoted them saying the reason they had passed this bill is because “they had made it a priority.” I sat and wept because I realized that this issue isn’t a priority for us either politically and sadly in the church. We have to get our 5-point sermons in without a mention of life except of course on Sanctity of Life Sunday. Again, I’m without words and deeply saddened.
What we need in this hour is courage in our leaders. Courage to stand even when no one stands with you and in the face of much opposition. Courage to lead, not take the path of least resistance. Courage to obey God rather than man.

Mark Twain once started: “The only difference between a Republican and Democrat is the spelling.” That was before abortion, now here in 2022 the GOP is becoming more and more like the DEMS.
Republicans are squabbling over policy and messaging surrounding abortion amid mounting evidence that the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is hurting the GOP ahead of midterms. America needs a third party badly, a party that stands on the Word of God. A Biblical Worldview.
I want to share with you these links that make me very sad as to what is happening here in America. I have warned of all of the following for years. God showed me. There is a growing number of pastors and congregants that are deaf to what is going on. Many Pastors fail to carry out The Great Commission and reach the lost. Our Great Commission Trip to Wyoming As Ethel Maharg says, “We have to get our 5-point sermons in without a mention of life except of course on Sanctity of Life Sunday. Again, I’m without words and deeply saddened.”
