NM House GOP Leader Jim Townsend: Doctors are fleeing NM under MLG’s regressive insurance scheme

Jim Townsend District 54 Representative at New Mexico House of Representatives

I need to add that I am seeing this exit by doctors in New Mexico first hand. At the UNM westside clinic, they lost two of their to doctors, including the doctor Sharon and I had. Sharon is an RN and Gretchen is a respiratory therapist. We treasure all those in the medial field, as I am sure you do also. I am very, very concerned about the mass exodus of doctors in New Mexico. This is complete failure by the Governor and her team. If Governor Lujan Grisham would like to reply to our message here, we would welcome it. BUT! We never get news releases from her office. We were taken off the list from day one I guess! This is an issue for all people! The nurses feel the pressure also! It also is very discouraging for those that cannot get an doctor’s appointment for weeks, even months! The governor really, really confuses me. This is so tragic for a state that is struggling in so many ways! Another Abortion Clinic Opens Up in Albuquerque, TRAGIC!!! Killing God’s Babies!!!!

This is from NM GOP House Leader Jim Townsend:

I cannot tell you the number of panicked calls House Republicans have been getting these past few months. Doctors and medical providers are closing up their offices and so many New Mexicans are now unable to find a doctor because Governor Lujan Grisham increased liability caps by 900%.

That is not a typo. The progressive-bloc Democrats increased liability caps for your personal doctor by 900%- even while COVID was ravaging our communities. This means that many private practice doctors will be forced to close their offices, lay off highly experienced medical employees, and leave you with fewer options for your healthcare.

This outrageous effort by liberal politicians is simply a money grab pushed by powerful trial lawyers in order to enrich themselves. Thirty-six regressive-Democrats, friendly with the powerful trial lawyer lobby, voted for this measure over the best interests of our communities, and this far-reaching proposal passed the House Chamber by just one vote.

Last December, following backlash and with a looming election, Santa Fe pushed the 900% liability cap increase off for one more year. House Republicans disagreed with kicking the can down the road, and fought for our healthcare community even as the progressives sold out our hard working medical heroes to an outside lobbying group.

The hypocrisy from the far-left using our medical community for both political gain during the pandemic, and as pawns for their political ambitions, should scare each and every New Mexican.

Best regards,

Jim Townsend, NM House Republican Leader
