According to Fox News, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that all handgun sales and transfers, even between private individuals, and the introduction of any “foreign” handguns into Canada, are prohibited, effective today. The Fox News article may be viewed HERE.
Prime Minister Trudeau issued a paper stating that “Canadians have the right to feel safe in their homes, in their schools, and in their places of worship. With handgun violence increasing across Canada, it is our duty to take urgent action to remove these deadly weapons from our communities. Today, we’re keeping more guns out of our communities, and keeping our kids safe.”
Clearly, this contrasts with the US Constitution’s Second Amendment, which states that “…the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Time will tell how this is received and what ramifications may result – both in Canada and in the US. So many have conflicting views here in the US despite the Second Amendment. We should pray that our elected officials seek God’s wisdom in this matter, as there will undoubtedly be supporters, non-supporters and politicians desiring to imitate Canada’s prohibition. In fact, President Biden has already stated his intention to limit US citizens’ access and ownership of certain firearms, including recent comments about eliminating 9mm handguns and ammunition.
