The video app said it will wage a legal fight against the Trump Administration’s efforts to ban the popular, Chinese-owned service over national-security concerns. TikTok, which is owned by China’s ByteDance, insisted that it not is a national-security threat and that the government is acting without evidence or due process. The company said it will file suit against the government later Monday, Aug. 24 in federal court in California. (AP Photo/File)

News Release From New Mexico House Republicans:

SANTA FE – Senator Gregg Schmedes (R-Tijeras) today introduced Senate Bill 208 to ban TikTok on state government-issued devices and networks. The legislation comes one month after President Joe Biden signed similar legislation banning the social media application from all federal government devices.

“In addition to the federal government, more than half of all the states have already banned TikTok from their government devices,” said Senator Schmedes. “Both the FBI and the FCC have warned about user data being shared with the Chinese government. This bill is a simple step we can take to mitigate national security risks and protect people’s personal information.”

Senate Bill 208 charges the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of state government with implementing controls to prevent the use of TikTok on state government-issued equipment or networks under their control. The bill was referred to Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee.
