Dads greatest Teacher

To my Children

First, let me tell you the first thing I learned,

I learned what true love is, so I start with I love you…

Hopefully, you already know that. But what is important to me is that you know why I love you.

If I were to ask you “Why does daddy love you?” What would you say?

I believe at any given point in your life, your confidence in my love will be based on something.

If you believe my love for you is based on your success, then if things are not going well, would you wonder if I still love you? If you believe that my love for you is based on good behavior, then when you do something wrong, you will still wonder if I love you.

So, as your father it is my job to clarify this for you now.

My love for you will never change, you are my son, you are my daughter, you are my children, and you always will be, you are mine before you were ever able to do anything worthy of approval.

But I must tell you this.

I am Sorry…

Fatherhood has not only been one of the most humbling experiences in my life, I always wanted to be the best dad, but I failed you all. And throughout your life you are the ones that suffered the consequences of my failures. So, I need you to hear this…

I am sorry for not being there, I am sorry for choosing the wrong paths in life and choosing that, over my relationships with you, I am sorry for making you feel like an inconvenience, I am sorry for not investing in your spiritual life as much as I should of. I am sorry for the times I’ve sinfully misrepresented what God is like in my words, actions, and priorities. When you were young you were unaware of the numerous times, I let you down and you still loved me unconditionally. Which I did not deserve…

But what I have learned today, is Jesus did it better, so I leaned on Him.

Today I want you to feel the love that Jesus has shown me, no person on earth can teach you that… Only Jesus. If you have ever felt love by me, know that my love is so shallow compared to the inexhaustible, life changing love that Jesus has for you. I made no sacrifices for you; my selfishness never gave you a chance at a decent life. But Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice so that you can have eternal life. So, all I want from you is forgiveness. Jesus died so that you and I could receive forgiveness, thus making it possible for us to give forgiveness.

I have failed to be a father, but Jesus is perfect in every way, He did it better, so I choose to be like Jesus. Things are different now, when I fail, Jesus now excels, because I have learned to decrease so that he can increase. So now that I know that doing it like Jesus is so much better, my desires have changed. My desire as a father …is that you know, Love, and worship Him.

So now I thank God that he has made me a father today, because Jesus is my teacher. I pray that you see Jesus through what I have done well in spite of what I have done wrong. So, with that being said…

A father does not just say he loves you; he shows you. So now I am going to do something that will be so unfamiliar to you. I am going to do what dads are supposed to do..
