BREAKING NEWS

The US House of Representatives voted 216 to 210 this afternoon to approve a resolution to vacate the (now former) Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy.  This is the first time in recent history that the House Speaker has been removed.

Not having the necessary 12 funding bills accomplished before the October 1, 2023 deadline for funding the federal government was, apparently, the final straw for the most conservative House Republicans, who feel that (then) Speaker McCarthy’s support of the recent continuing resolution instead of completing work on the actual budget bills was incongruent with the promises he made in order to ascend to the speakership.

It appears that Congressman McCarthy may have been surprised about the outcome of the vote.  Emotions are running high in all quarters.  The House was immediately adjourned following the vote to vacate.

How this proceeds will be interesting, as there does not appear to be a consensus candidate to replace Congressman McCarthy.

As for the Democrats, this is a win-win situation almost regardless of what happens, as it may be very difficult moving forward for House Republicans to acquire sufficient votes to replace Congressman McCarthy with a hard-right conservative speaker – which once again opens up the potential for the next House Speaker to be a Democrat.
