A Call to Serve

Today we honor the military men and women who serve and have served our country, and especially remember the ones who gave their lives while doing so.  There have always been wars and rumors of wars as the Bible says there would be.  America has had its share of wars for sure, and we are happy to recognize those men, women, and their families who made the ultimate sacrifice in order to keep America free.

Many of those soldiers who served during times of war have been honored and immortalized by books and movies made in their honor.  Sargent Alvin York, and Audie Murphy are the ones that come to mind.  These men were the most decorated soldiers of WWI and WWII.  York was drafted into the Army and tried to get out of it by registering as a religious objector, which he was denied.  Murphy lied about his age in order to enlist at only 17 years old.  Both men spent the rest of their lives serving within the military in some capacity.

Thousands of unsung heroes also answered the call, yet got no national recognition for the sacrifices they made.  They left behind families, friends, careers along with plans and dreams for a very different future.  One day set aside to honor them is much less than they deserve.  If we know or see a veteran today, let’s take the time to thank them foe their service and answering the call to serve.

In reading about Sergeant York and Audie Murphy today, I learned that both men did everything they could to encourage the military to do more for the men and women who returned home.  Murphy especially suffered from PTSD…what they called Military Fatigue at that time.  Too many suffer from this result of war today and we still have a long way to go in helping them find relief from it.  War is an unnecessary evil that could be prevented if only people and nations could learn better ways to get along.

The conflict in Israel right now is of utmost importance.  Pray for peace and divine intervention as this situation moves forward.  Let us not lean unto our own understanding, but pray for wisdom that comes from God who gives it gladly to those who ask.  ! Peter 1: 24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.  The grass withereth and the flower thereof falleth away.  25 But the word of the Lord endureth forever. Amen
