The Associated Press (“AP News”) reports that the US House of Representatives (“House”) voted yesterday (11/14/2023) to approve Speaker Mike Johnson’s plan involving continuing resolutions to temporarily fund the federal government and thereby prevent a government shutdown through the upcoming holidays.
Speaker Johnson was forced to reach across the aisle to Democrats, even as hard-right conservatives revolted against his plan. The plan passed on a bipartisan basis, 336-95, with 93 Republicans voting against it.
This was the first time Speaker Johnson had to force vital legislation through the House with the support of Democratic members – which was the same political move that cost former Speaker Kevin McCarthy his job only a few weeks ago.
The AP News report may be read HERE.
My brothers and sisters, as this writer reported two days ago (see the FGGAM article HERE), the following question was posed: “Has the unwillingness of Democrats to join with Republicans on anything, coupled with the unwillingness of Republicans to agree on anything, even within their own party, caused the US federal government to become ungovernable?”
I’m pleased to report that the answer to this question, self-seeking political goals notwithstanding, is “not quite yet!” Speaker Johnson has shown great insight and fortitude, especially considering the manner in which he was recently thrust into the highest level of House leadership and is now second in line for the presidency. It seems clear that God’s hand is upon the speaker, who has been raised up for this moment in time.
Some scripture to consider:
Psalm 20:7 (Amplified Bible)
“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, [b]ut we will remember and trust in the name of the Lord our God.”
Psalm 40:4 (ESV)
“Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!”
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge [H]im, and [H]e will make straight your paths.”
Psalm 118:29 (NKJV)
“Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.”
1 Corinthians 3:19 (NLT)
“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, ‘He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.’”
Praise Jesus forevermore!
