Be thankful for those that protect us and come to our aide when trouble raises its ugly head.
I am really so sick to my stomach in reporting more and more stories like this. Two young heroes struck down by a thug. The families will never be the same. There will be an empty chair at two families holiday gatherings one in New Mexico and one in S.C. As you go about your days, be thankful for those that protect us and come to our aide when trouble raises its ugly head.

“My mother’s death doesn’t make sense to me. So I can’t begin to imagine what types of feelings and emotions and rollercoasters you all are going through right now,” said Roxie Currie, daughter to Phonesia Machado-Fore.
Good morning, I’m writing this statement to give the world some insight into who Justin was. Justin was an amazing Son, father, spouse, brother, friend, and Police Officer. The role he played in the lives of his family and those close to him will never be forgotten. The fact that he put his heart into every single thing that he did was the epitome of who Justin was. It’s so hard to put his life and who he was into paragraphs because he was indescribable.
Justin loved me and our family. He always went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. Not just financially or materialistic, but he was constantly present. He always let the girls and I know that we were his priority. When he wasn’t on patrol he was with us, or putting back into our small community. Justin coached sports for our girls. He loved the small town feel and had no hesitation to move back to Logan so that we could raise our family. His friendliness and kind demeanor will never be forgotten in Logan or anywhere else for that matter. That’s one thing I’m sure of. Justin loved to fish. He loved to hunt. He was your typical man with a love for the outdoors. He would get down to children’s level and play with his undivided attention. Justin had a way with children, not just ours. He had a kindness about him that made children and their parents alike feel comfortable and safe. Who he grew up to be was no doubt attributed to his upbringing. Justin was raised in a very tight knit family. The middle child of 3, Justin was so extremely close to his mom, Terry, and had an amazing bond with his dad, Jim. He has a brother, Brandon who is his best friend and his wife, Amanda. He has a brother J.C , who passed. We know J.C was waiting for him, and that brings some comfort. He loved being around his nieces and nephews. He loved that we lived close by for the kids to grow up with each other. One of our nieces lives in Northern New Mexico and he was always up for long stays for her to be with us and our girls. Family was a huge part of who Justin was and he always made sure we all knew that.
I don’t know what the coming days will be like for my girls and I. But we will try to move forward knowing that Justin is with us every step of the way. From the bottom of my heart, I cannot thank you enough. My girls and I thank you for the donations, the kind words and most of all the prayers. Reading posts on social media about him, and how he impacted their lives has brought a smile to my face. Knowing that these are memories that they’ll eventually share at some point with our girls about who their dad was, warms my heart. I can’t thank everyone enough for sharing them. Being reminded that he has not or will not be forgotten has been a huge comfort.
I would like to thank all of the agencies throughout the State of New Mexico. Their tireless hours spent to capture his killer and their devotion to the citizens of New Mexico will never be repaid. We’re forever grateful. They have been so helpful, in so many ways. Many have shared their experiences with Justin. All of their presence with us during this time will never be forgotten. I would like to thank the Police agencies in South Carolina for assisting the New Mexico State Police to identify the assailant. My condolences, along with my family’s, go out to the EMT whose life was also taken at the hands of this criminal.
I know our Lord, God, is giving me the strength to get through the days.
May God bless all of you across New Mexico, the World who have prayed for us upon hearing the story of what happened to Justin. Even though that’s how his life was taken, that’s not how we will continue his legacy. Justin was so much more than that.
