Accusations of bias at publicly funded National Public Radio have led some Republicans in Congress to introduce a bill to defund it.
NPR has been on the hot seat ever since Senior Business Editor Uri Berliner wrote this article for the Free Press website, in which he accused NPR of not only being biased, but completely devoid of any Republicans on the editorial staff.
Berliner told the “Honestly with Bari Weiss” podcast, “I got so frustrated with what I saw was the sort of the lack of different perspectives in our coverage that I decided to look at voter registration and, you know, my staff.” More Here
I’ve said for years that news agencies, art projects and musical groups (e.g., “public radio/TV, city art projects, symphony orchestras) should never be funded by local, county, state or federal governments with taxpayer monies. NPR has been a notoriously (highly obviously) one-sided dispenser of the news for many years. Government should fund things authorized in accord with its guiding constitution(s) and laws which benefit the greater good of all citizens (e.g., infrastructure, policy, schools, public health). And most especially, government, in light of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, should have no business in sponsoring, controlling the press (implicitly or explicitly) or dispensing the “official” news of the day. If NPR were 100% privately funded, that would be an entirely different story and there would be no issue. The first clue of trouble is found in the very name of NPR – National Public Radio!
