Moms, Our Heros

We have all heard of a mom who lifted a 2000-pound car off her child to save their life. We all say she is a hero and rightly so. What caused her to do this? Did she always have extraordinary strength? No, she had a reason and that was her baby under there and she knew that if she didn’t, her baby would die.

While these stories bring a lot of attention, I would like to bring attention to another kind of Mom hero. It is that mom that when she hears that the baby in her womb is in trouble, and she must have a C-section to save them both, succumbs to the blade of the surgeon.

To those moms who just weren’t ready but chose to give their baby life then release them into the loving arms of an adopting family. A selfless act for that child, thinking of their well-being instead of her own, knowing she will always have a longing to see them.

For those moms that have lost a child. Those moms who never got to see their baby because they never got the opportunity to live. They died before they were able to take their first breath. This is a wound that goes so deep that she carries it to her grave.

We see in Matthew 2:18, Rachel weeping for her children:  “A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”  In Luke 2:38, Mary the mother of our Lord, is told that a sword would pierce her very soul.

And there is the single mom who finds herself raising three kids after the dad walks out.  She works two or three jobs, and she sells homemade baked goods and tamales to make ends meet. The one who is left with seven kids after her husband passes away, and even with her meager income manages to send them all to college.

How about the mom passed out from exhaustion sleeping on a hospital chair with her baby tucked inside her shirt because this precious baby girl with Downs Syndrome got here at 35 weeks. A bit early and needing the comfort of her mama. This mom while pregnant was told by the world and pressured by the medical community as they said that bringing this baby into the world would really be a sacrifice and she should consider her options (meaning abortion). She decided that her baby was not a life worth sacrificing. She was a life worth sacrificing for.

Motherhood is never easy, but it is one of the greatest gifts and privileges God has given us. It comes with the aches and pains of pregnancy, then comes labor and this is only the beginning. There are many sleepless nights, yet she gets up to hold, kiss and comfort her precious little person. Nothing is so soothing to a mom as holding a sleeping child in your arms. Those sleepless nights don’t end when they are babies. Moms get to be there for every cut, scrape and broken heart their child experiences and like Mary in Luke 2:51, they treasure all these things in their heart.

To every mom, we thank you for all sacrifices so we might have a shot at this thing called life. Thank you for patching up our skinned knees and broken heart. Thank you for lifting those heavy cars and heavy burdens off our lives we thought would kill us.  Most of all, thank you for taking us before our Heavenly Father so in the end we would have everlasting life with Him and you.

Thank you, Mom. We Love You!
