REUTERS reports that according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, Russia plans to change its doctrine on the use of nuclear weapons in response to what it regards as Western escalation in the Ukraine War.
Russia’s existing nuclear doctrine, issued in a decree by President Vladimir Putin in 2020, allows Russia to use nuclear weapons in the event of a nuclear attack by an enemy or a conventional attack that threatens the existence of the state.

According to a report by Newsweek, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned today (9/1/2024) that the Kremlin is changing its nuclear war policy in response to what it says is Western escalation in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, according to Russian state news agency Tass.
The Russia-Ukraine war has raged on for more than two years after President Vladimir Putin ordered the ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine in February 2022. Although Moscow aimed for a quick victory, Ukraine’s spirited defense, bolstered by Western aid, has blocked Russia from making substantial gains.

My brothers and sisters, it’s true that President Putin has blustered about potential nuclear weapons use ever since he started the war with Ukraine and quickly discovered that the Russian military was not sufficiently prepared to timely achieve its goal of destroying Ukraine’s government and taking over the country, but when ‘the bear’ is talking about nuclear weapons use, wisdom is to pay attention!
As this writer has stated many times, for President Putin, this is a war of choice. Russia is a huge country full of resources, including oil & gas and minerals. This is an evil war being pursued with little to no concern for the loss of lives in Ukraine or even of its own military members. Russia suffers under the leadership of a former Soviet KGB officer seeking the destruction of Ukraine and the death of Ukraine’s elected president in an apparent effort to relive the ‘glory’ days of the former Soviet Union — placing all NATO-aligned nations at potential risk if left unchecked.
As followers of Christ, let’s continue to pray for Ukraine, and all of the surrounding nations, asking the Lord to change hearts and to bring a just and quick end to Russia’s evil attack against the free and sovereign nation of Ukraine and its people. Let’s pray that Ukraine’s civilian and military leadership would make decisions in accord with the wisdom and the will of God. Millions of lives, both Ukrainian and Russian, face untold human suffering and are at great risk.
As the bible succinctly and profoundly states:
Psalm 34:14 (Amplified Bible)
“Turn away from evil and do good; [s]eek peace and pursue it.”
