A beloved Alabama pastor was fatally shot by his own daughter at his home in Mobile on Sunday. His wife, who was also shot during the attack, is recovering from injuries and is expected to survive.

The pastor, identified as Robert Matthews of Joy Tabernacle Full Gospel Church, was gunned down on Sunday along with his wife, Twinetta Matthews, by their 36-year-old daughter, Charity Aleis Matthews, according to court documents cited by WKRG.

Authorities, who have charged her with two counts of attempted murder, one count of murder, and one count of reckless endangerment, suspect mental health issues might have been a factor in the shooting. More Here

Mental illnesses are common in the United States and around the world. It is estimated that more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness (59.3 million in 2022; 23.1% of the U.S. adult population). Mental illnesses include many different conditions that vary in degree of severity, ranging from mild to moderate to severe. Two broad categories can be used to describe these conditions: Any Mental Illness (AMI) and Serious Mental Illness (SMI). AMI encompasses all recognized mental illnesses. SMI is a smaller and more severe subset of AMI. Additional information on mental illnesses can be found on the NIMH Health Topics Pages.
