National Day of Prayer by Amy Parks
In his defense Jesus said to them, ‘My Father is always at His work to this very day, and I too am working.’ John 5:14
ReflectionGreetings prayer partner, We pray that you had a Merry Christmas as we celebrated the birth of Christ Jesus! |
If you are like me, these days between Christmas and the New Year overflow with to-do lists. My to do list is filled with notes like ‘Clear away wrapping paper. Organize leftover food. Take donations to the donation center. Go through the stack of mail on the counter that has been there since December first.’
As I go about the tasks, I find myself pondering the memories of this Christmas, treasuring them away in my heart. Sometimes I find myself remembering some of the painful moments from the year or past years; pain that I have surrounded to the Lord, asking Him to heal and comfort. I also find myself reminiscing on memories of Christmases past with a touch of nostalgia, missing days that felt simpler, or holiday celebrations when beloved family members were still on this side of eternity, sitting with me at the table, enjoying times of laugher.
Maybe you are there with me. Pondering. Remembering. Reminiscing. |
About the National Day of PrayerThe National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America, evidenced by the Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May. The next National Day of Prayer is May 1, 2025. |
As we look back on cherished memories or painful events of the past, let us always look for God at work. Throughout scripture we see God called many names and referred to in many ways as the faithful and righteous throughout history grappled and tried to understand His vastness, His majesty, and His character. In the same way, we can look back on our own lives and see the moments where God revealed Himself in all kinds of ways.
In times of loneliness in my life, He has been The God Who Sees, just as in Genesis 16:13.
When decisions needed to be made or I faced difficult situations, He has been my Wonderful Counselor, just it was foretold in Isaiah 9:6.
In seasons where I saw much fruitfulness in my life, He was the Vine, just as in John 15:5.
When I confessed with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and believed in my heart that God raised Him from the dead, He became my Savior, as promised in Romans 10:9.
Can you think of ways you have experienced God moving and working in the past? As you look back see God at work, I encourage you to share with someone how you have seen God moving throughout your life. Testifying of His goodness glorifies God and can encourage someone else to reexamine their memories and difficult moments, and see God ministering in their own life! |
Prayer Partner, would you pray this prayer with me? |
Lord Jesus, You are high and lifted up, You are the Light of the World, you are a strong tower, You are my defender, my shield, my Savior, and my Shepherd. I praise You for these moments that You draw my heart into looking back toward the past and You open my eyes to show me where You were at work. In many of those moments I had no idea how You were working, but now in hindsight I see how You moved. Thank You, for never leaving me or forsaking me. As I look back over the events of my life, keep me from falling into comparison, or letting nostalgia steal the joy You have set before me. Keep me overflowing with Hope and trust in You, all the days of my life. In Jesus name, amen. |
Peace and blessings,
