I will begin with a brief comment about the newest and closest to me fire in Southern California, the Hughes Fire. On this second day of this fire, the winds are extreme in some areas, much harder and more frequent today than yesterday in Green Valley where I live. The fire is well beyond 10,000 acres and growing, and as one reporter commented, “burning over 23 football fields every minute” (ABC 7 News). 50,000 people have been under evacuation orders.
Where we live, we had the sounds of various firefighting aircraft passing overhead for hours. It had reminded me of the many sounds of Vietnam in ’66 and ’67. Some may not be aware of our use of wildfires as weapons in that war. After the Agent Orange was used to defoliate jungle areas, we set those dried jungle areas ablaze to expose Viet Cong hiding places. These local wildfires stir up many memories.
If there is any good news about the Hughes Fire, at this point there have been no injuries, or structures damaged. I ask that you might join me in praying for an end to these winds, and for Supernatural weather pattern changes bringing slow, moderate, and continuing rain to all of California, and in particular, Southern California, very soon. Pray On for California!
