KOB 4 News (Albuquerque, NM) reports that yesterday (1/9/2025), the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled that state law prevents local governments from restricting abortion or regulating abortion clinics and providers.

The New Mexico Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling invalidates ordinances that Lea and Roosevelt counties and the cities of Hobbs and Clovis passed to restrict access to abortion services.  The court issued a writ of mandamus prohibiting local governments from enforcing similar ordinances.

New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice Shannon Bacon wrote in the high court’s opinion that “[o]ur Legislature granted to counties and municipalities all powers and duties not inconsistent with the laws of New Mexico.  The Ordinances violate this core precept and invade the Legislature’s authority to regulate access to and provision of reproductive healthcare.”

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued a press release yesterday (1/9/2025) stating the following:

Governor applauds New Mexico Supreme Court ruling striking down local abortion restrictions

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham

SANTA FE – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued the following statement after the New Mexico Supreme Court unanimously struck down abortion restrictions enacted by conservative cities and counties:

“Today’s unanimous Supreme Court decision affirms what we’ve known all along – healthcare decisions belong to New Mexican women and their doctors, not politicians.  While some communities may disagree, our state constitution and laws are clear.  No city or county can restrict the fundamental rights of New Mexicans or override state law.

This ruling ensures that New Mexico will remain a safe haven for healthcare access and individual freedom.  We will continue protecting reproductive rights while neighboring states strip them away.  I’m grateful to Attorney General Torrez and to our Supreme Court for defending the rule of law and the rights of all New Mexicans.

Let me be crystal clear:  as long as I’m governor, New Mexico will fight any attempt to limit reproductive healthcare access, whether those challenges come from local ordinances, other states, or the federal government.  Healthcare decisions are personal, and they’ll stay that way in New Mexico.”

My brothers and sisters, it’s as if the governor is thrilled about the killing of unborn babies.  She stated it directly and in her own words:  “[I] will fight any attempt to limit reproductive healthcare access…”.

Despite the protestations of some, there can be no doubt that she wants New Mexico to be a land where killing your unborn baby is proudly and falsely considered healthcare, and where there are absolutely no limits on when a baby can be aborted.  She will fight any attempt to limit abortion.

What happened to the not-so-long-ago held position of liberal politicians such as Hillary Clinton who stated in 2008 that “I believe abortion should be safe, legal and rare, and when I say ‘rare’, I mean rare!”

The argument that abortion is healthcare and reproductive medicine is false on its face, as the undisputed goal of every abortion is not to heal or to protect, but to kill the unborn child.  The argument that killing one’s own unborn baby is a “human right” – as many persons have argued – is ridiculous on its face (see Exodus 20:13).  The Bible, including the Ten Commandments, makes it clear that life is precious to God, who knew every person before they were ever formed in their mothers’ wombs (see Psalm 139:13-16).

Simply put, one does not show compassion for others by agreeing to murder.

As followers of Christ, let’s pray that the Holy Spirit touches the hearts of those predisposed to support abortion, opening their eyes and ears to be sensitive to what is actually being done to the unborn children.  Let’s also pray that mothers (and yes, fathers too) would be moved to make all necessary arrangements for an unborn child for which they aren’t prepared to raise – as so many persons still desire children to adopt.

God does not make mistakes!  It is the evil one (see John 10:10) who does not want options other than abortion to be discussed and shared with women in need of true compassion and assistance with a pregnancy.  Bearing children is a gift from the Lord (see Psalm 127:3).

Here are the above-referenced scriptures:

Exodus 20:13 (Amplified Bible)
“You shall not commit murder (unjustified, deliberate homicide).”

Psalm 139:13-16 (NLT)
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.  Thank [Y]ou for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.  You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.  You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in [Y]our book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”

John 10:10 (NKJV)
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.  I [Jesus] have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

Psalm 127:3 (NKJV)
“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, [t]he fruit of the womb is a reward.”

Praise Jesus forevermore!
