Public trust in Pastors continues to decline

This mess makes it harder for all the wonderful Pastors in America. However, we must be aware of the perception that many have of Pastors and the Church. This stuff is hard on my heart, but God has called me to be a Watchman on the Wall, not a PR agent for disfunction.

Reports of sexual abuse in religious settings, such as the 2002 investigations by The Boston Globe, appear to have eroded trust. Gallup described 2002 and 2018 as points in time that mirrored negative developments in the Catholic Church and other denominations, while Lifeway pointed to the “additional sex abuse reports in other denominations and Christian groups” as relevant factors.

Gallup’s data also suggested that Americans’ changing religious affiliations and decreased churchgoing habits could be contributing to the decline.

Lifeway mentioned that the “growing proportion of nonreligious adults express lower trust than religious adults,” which influences overall ratings. This downturn in religiosity is reflected in how pastors fare among demographic segments.

Republicans (46%) rate clergy higher than Independents (24%) and Democrats (25%), according to Lifeway. White Americans (37%) are more likely to view pastors positively compared with non-white Americans (20%). Younger adults aged 18-34 gave pastors a 20% rating, while older demographics show greater trust levels. More Here
