A Grief Affirmation: When Anxiety Strikes and Grows
Gary Roe: Feeling anxious is common for those who are grieving. How we handle anxiety when it comes is important. Loss stirs our fears. Life is normally full of unknowns, but now we're thinking about all of them. Everything can seem shaky. We can feel vulnerable and broken. Anxiety can take root and grow deep and wide in the grieving heart.

I am blessed to be called upon to help people during the time of of grief. It is a calling from God. I officiate many funerals. I do my best to comfort families, I always let them know they can call me, and also that I will come visit them. I also have resources that I can share with folks. I have recommended folks to get to know Gary Roe. Gary’s writings have brought me comfort over the years. I am thankful for this man of God. PS: I am still grieving the passing of my brother-in-law Paul Rogers, I also grieve for my sister Deb who loves her hubby very, very much. We also mourn the passing of our dear friends Frank and Alice Hayley and Mike Fisher. Its been a tough time.
From Our Dear Friend Gay Roe…….
Loss is terribly painful. The grief journey can be very challenging.
Here’s another Grief Affirmation for you.
When anxiety strikes, I’ll breathe deeply, pray, and remind myself that it will pass.
Anxiety is powerful. If left unchecked, it can run our lives.
Grieving hearts know all about anxiety. When loss comes, our hearts are hit.
Emotions surge up from within us. Somewhere in the mix of shock, sadness, anger, guilt, fear, and depression, anxiety inevitably rears its head.
In other words, feeling anxious is common for those who are grieving. How we handle anxiety when it comes is important.
Loss stirs our fears. Life is normally full of unknowns, but now we’re thinking about all of them. Everything can seem shaky. We can feel vulnerable and broken. Anxiety can take root and grow deep and wide in the grieving heart.
On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus said to His grieving disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me” (John 14:1).
On this painful journey of loss, our hearts can be easily troubled. Yet, we have a choice. Instead of following and feeding the anxiety within, we can choose to trust God. We can choose to believe.
Believe that He loves us. Believe that He knows us and what we’re going through. Believe that He is with us, right here, right now.
Believe that He has a good plan for us. Believe that He goes before us and will be with us. Believe that He is leading us and guiding us through this wilderness.
Believe that He has us. Believe that He is sufficient for all we’re facing and all we will face in the future. Believe that He is working in all things for our ultimate.
Believe that He will sustain us, hold us together, and heal our broken hearts.
The apostle Paul wrote, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
Instead of staying anxious, we can pray. We can take our eyes from our fears and focus on Christ. We can trust God and choose to be thankful. We can pour out our hearts to Him.
As we choose Christ over our anxiety, His promise is that we will experience His peace. His peace will guard our hearts and minds.
Christ is our life. He knows us. He is our peace and our strength. We live in Him. He lives in us. Since we have Him, we have all we need for this taxing journey.
When anxiety comes, we can choose trusting Christ over having a troubled heart. When we feel anxious, we can choose to pray and be thankful instead of focusing on our fears.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.” (John 14:1, ESV)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7, ESV)
Lord, I cast my cares and anxiety on You. I give it all to You. I choose to believe You, Lord Jesus. I choose to trust You. I choose to pray and release all things to You. I choose to be thankful. Give me Your peace, Lord. I am Yours. In Jesus’ name…
