BREAKING: NM House Democrats Fund $10 Million Abortion Center in Northern NM and Kill Baby Box Bill
Pro-Life Senators & NMAFL Fight Back – Press Conference Today
Yesterday, in a dark-of-night move at the last minute, Gov. Lujan Grisham snuck in $10 million for a new “reproductive health clinic” in “Northern New Mexico” into HB 450, a $1.2 billion capital outlay bill intended to fund various infrastructure projects across the state.
New Mexico Alliance for Life (NMAFL) sounded the alarm on this impending plan in an investigative report last November, where University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC) abortion activists studied 3 NM counties for expanding their taxpayer-funded abortion empire–including northern New Mexico. Stay tuned, NMAFL will release information about the location of the new taxpayer funded abortion clinic and what you can do to fight back!
This would be the SECOND $10 million taxpayer-funded abortion center, in the 2022 legislative session, in an unprecedented move, Gov. Lujan-Grisham allocated $10 million taxpayer dollars for a Doña Ana abortion center.
Pro-life Republicans pushed back against the last-minute funding. Reps. Stefani Lord and Rod Montoya asked why the bill was not slated as a “stand-alone bill,” pointing out how there was no public discussion or input. Rep. Lord decried the abortion center funding stating the need for critical infrastructure like wells and sewer updates in her district that should be prioritized over another state-funded abortion clinic.
“This has not been vetted, it’s ‘example A’ of circumventing the process by putting this poison pill in this bill,” said state Rep. John Block in a heated debate on the House Floor. “The vast majority of New Mexicans don’t support taxpayer funding for abortions.”
Republican Reps.Rod Montoya and Randall Pettigrew offered substitute bills removing the abortion center funding but House Democrats voted down both substitute bills. HB 450 passed by a final vote of 41 – 25, with every House Democrat voting for it except Rep. Joseph Sanchez (D-Rio Arriba). The bill now heads to the Senate Finance Committee before the Senate Floor. Contact members here to REMOVE THE $10 MILLION TAXPAYER-FUNDED ABORTION CLINIC. Read more updates below.
Dems kill life-saving Baby Box Bill – AGAIN!
Late last night, New Mexico Senate Democrats once again killed a Baby Box bill which was reintroduced with an emergency revision. This is despite urgent calls from supporters like you, to protect newborns from abandonment in trash bags or worse. Lawmakers tabled the bill ” even as real-life cases—like the recent adoption of a baby safely surrendered in a Belen Baby Box—highlight its life-saving impact. Lt. Chris Martinez, the firefighter who witnessed the surrender firsthand, urged lawmakers to act, but the bill was rejected, denying critical protections. Advocates warn that every day without action risks another tragic case of infant abandonment.
Medical Professionals Speak Out on Coerced Participation in Abortions
Today, in a press conference with pro-life legislators and NMAFL spokesperson, Suzette Presti, three New Mexico medical professionals who faced pressure from employers to participate in abortions called on legislators today to hear SB 347, a bill designed to protect healthcare providers from being forced to violate their conscience or risk losing their jobs. SB 347 Conscience Protections for Medical Professionals HAS YET to receive a committee hearing and would ensure that providers can act according to their moral and ethical beliefs without fear of retribution. Sens. Bill Sharer, David Gallegos, Nicole Tobiassen, Gabriel Ramos, Candy Ezell and Pat Boone stood with these medical professionals in advocating for this critical protection.
