Israel today is constantly on the defensive against unfair criticism and even outright demonization. Those of us who support the Jewish state may have gotten used to always having to confront the Israel haters, but things were not always this way. In fact, the nation of Israel was once seen as a small but valiant nation waging a battle for its life against evil Goliaths. So how did this all change? A few short decades ago, Israel was admired for making the desert bloom and for standing up to the mighty Soviet Union and its Arab allies. It was seen as a bastion of Western freedoms and democracy, and a light in a dark region. But today, Israel is vilified in the Western media, on our campuses, and even in many of our pulpits. So exactly how was Israel perceived in the past by Western democracies and how has that perception changed? What are the reasons behind these changes? How has violence and terrorism directed at Israel been turned into a weapon against it in the court of public opinion? And why should we in the Western democracies care about how Israel is seen worldwide? How the World Views Israel! That’s our focus next week here on Front Page Jerusalem. We’ll take you inside a recent briefing by one of Israel’s most staunch defenders today, Col. Richard Kemp, a retired British army officer. He’ll give us his analysis on why the world has changed its perceptions of Israel for the worse and what this means for the future.
On today’s show, we’re looking at the changing perceptions of Israel around the world. How did Israel go from being viewed as a courageous little David to an evil Goliath in the eyes of so many in the West? And what can be done to turn around this troubling trend? These are questions which were addressed in a recent lecture at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv by Col. Richard Kemp, a retired British military officer. Kemp has been very outspoken in recent years about the humane way in which the IDF fights its battles, and now he’s taking on the increasingly negative way Israel is viewed in the West.

The nation of Israel and the Jewish people abroad have both been facing a wave of hatred and incitement over recent years, and things only seem to be getting worse. Now some claim that their criticism of Israel is not aimed at the Jewish people in general. But many world leaders, including Pope Francis, have insisted that anti-Israelism is just a disguised form of anti-Semitism, and that both are equally wrong. And yet the hateful campaign to delegitimize and defame Israel continues unabated and is beginning to have a disturbing impact in the Western world. In one of the latest examples, Israel is being singled out for condemnation at the United Nations for its treatment of children. Such accusations bring back painful memories of the vicious blood libels that Jews in medieval Europe were murdering children to use their blood to make matza. So who is behind the efforts to defame and demonize Israel and the Jews? What are some of the accusations and motifs they are using to spread their hateful messages? How effective have they been in impacting world opinion against Israel? And how can Israel and the Jewish people fight back against these lies and distortions? The War to Erase Israel! That’s our focus this week here on Front Page Jerusalem. We’ll hear from a leading Israeli expert on anti-Semitism in the post-Holocaust era. Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs has just completed his latest book on the subject, entitled “The War of a Million Cuts.” In it, he explains how we can all fight back against rising anti-Semitism and the campaign to delegitimize and ultimately eliminate Israel.
