Update 9/5 1:19pm CONCERNED PARENT WRITES FGGAM NEWS ABOUT THIS INCIDENT:
I find it disconcerting that I wasn’t aware of the incident at Helen Cordero Primary School until the following day.
Here is a summary of my morning: After dropping off my daughter in her classroom this AM, I heard in passing from another parent that a gun was brought yesterday. After making my way to the office, I received a written statement describing the circumstances of the 1st grade boy (7 years old) bringing the loaded firearm to his class. I was very upset of course, and wasn’t feeling very safe for my daughter to say the least. Its one thing to have an isolated incident that was correctly handled, but this situation was NOT correctly handled by APS and Helen Cordero.
I want to know what steps the school is taking to ensure the safety of our elementary students. Is there an active investigation of the parents of the child who brought the gun? Why wasn’t I notified the day-of the incident? Why was my 6 year old expected to bring the written statement of the incident home?

A seven-year-old first grader is suspended after bringing a loaded gun to school. The boy told a friend and a teacher at Helen Cordero Elementary School he had a weapon in his backpack. The teacher looked inside and found a loaded semi-automatic Glock handgun. The school district suspended him for a day and is investigating how the student got the gun. Juvenile probation officers have been notified. Below is a letter that the School principle sent to Parents. The letter was provided to FGGAM news by a concerned Parent. Let us pray for the young student, his family and all those involved in this trauma yesterday.
