Motor Vehicle Division Warns Against Potential Auto Insurance Fraud
SANTA FE – New Mexico residents receiving automated phone calls claiming to be from the Motor Vehicle Division offering cheaper auto insurance rates are being warned against potential insurance fraud.
“New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division does not sell auto insurance and anyone who receives these calls should be highly suspicious and ignore them,” said Demesia Padilla, Cabinet Secretary for the State Taxation and Revenue Department that oversees MVD. “We recommend that anyone who is planning to get new auto insurance or change their existing policy contact a certified insurance agent or company.”
MVD has received several calls and complaints from residents about receiving these calls from an unknown company claiming to be MVD. The automated message also asks residents to call back 575-446-1594.
The State Taxation and Revenue Department’s Tax Fraud Investigations Unit has also launched an investigation into this issue.
