ICEJ NEWS REPORTS:
Russia and Turkey trade accusations amidst rising economic tensions
Russia has signaled its intent to take retaliatory measures against Turkey for the downing of an Su-24 bomber by Turkish F-16s earlier this week, including by reducing imports of Turkish agricultural products and the cancellation of various joint energy and industrial projects. Russian officials reiterated their demand for an apology and explanation Wednesday, while Turkish officials said the Russian statements were “emotional” and “unfitting.” The rhetorical battle has also included accusations and counter-accusations about which country is contributing more to the intractability of the conflict in Syria and the broader regional crisis. Meanwhile, Turkish diplomatic facilities and businesses in Russia were targeted by vandals and angry mobs this week, causing extensive physical damage and adding fuel to the tensions between the two governments.
Elsewhere, Russia also appeared to be looking for ways to compensate for the reduced imports of food and consumer goods from Turkey by increasing such imports from Israel. Visits to Turkey by Russian tourists are also likely to see a sharp decline, with some Israeli tourism officials expressing hopes that some of those visitors might come to the Jewish State instead
