SANTA FE—As voter turnout continues to break records across the nation, New Mexico election officials are preparing for the state’s June 7th primary election with a focus on accurate and efficient administration. That preparation includes keeping voters informed on how to register to vote, when and where to vote and ensuring that the voting experience is quick, simple and error-free.
“It’s clear that New Mexicans are excited to participate,” said Secretary of State Brad Winter. “And we’re working with county clerks across the state to make sure eligible New Mexicans are registered by May 10th and can get out there and exercise their right to vote.”
Notably, the Office of the Secretary of State is working with county clerks to confirm adequate staffing, check-in equipment and voting equipment throughout New Mexico. The secretary has responded to county requests for additional check-in equipment in anticipation of higher voter turnout in order to ensure better service during early voting and on Election Day.
“We’re doing more than ever to make the lines move quickly, make sure our voter rolls are accurate and make sure all those who can participate in our democracy do participate,” said Winter. “Our staff, along with all 33 county clerks, are focusing on providing the best possible service to our voters.”
Voters wishing to confirm their registration or party affiliation can use the Voter View tool available on the Secretary of State’s website.
New Mexico’s “closed” primary system means that only those registered in one of the two major parties can participate in primary nomination contests. In order to participate, voters must be registered as either a Democrat or a Republican by May 10th. Eligible voters with a current or expired New Mexico driver’s license or state I.D. can register or update their information and party affiliation online on the Secretary of State’s website. Since its launch in January, more than 16,000 registrants have used the online system, which is available in both English and Spanish and is accessible to applicants with visual impairments.
Registrants can also register in-person at any Motor Vehicle Division office or county clerk’s office or request a form by mail by calling the Secretary of State at 505-827-3600.
