Israel’s police agencies unveiled a plan this week to invest NIS 1 billion in upgrading security in eastern Jerusalem neighborhoods. The plan includes the deployment of 1,200 additional officers and hundreds of CCTV cameras and other infrastructure. Police spokespersons said the reforms were intended to improve the quality of life for all residents of the city, but many residents and leaders of eastern Jerusalem’s Arab community denounced it as a tightening of the “occupation” of the city by Israel.
