In this devotional prayer outline, we have covered the first two aspects of prayer: 1. “Praise”.
- “Confession”
Now we will look at the climax of a believer’s life of prayer, which gives of himself, sacrifices time, concerns, and even tears on behalf of someone else.
- “Intercession”
Made up of two Latin words – “Inter” meaning “between” and “Cedere” meaning “to go”, together they mean “to go between”. This is a spiritual action of mediation, or intervention. You engage in spiritual warfare on behalf of someone else! This is the time in your praying to set aside all personal situations, concerns, and struggles to pray for someone else . . . to stand in the gap!
“ And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
Therefore, have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.” (Ezekiel 22:30-31)
Beloved, if God does not change, in heart or purpose, can you not see that He is still looking . . . expecting . . . counting on . . . someone to stand in the gap . . . rescuing someone from the divine judgment against him or her for his or her sin? That is the major role of intercession!
I refer to my study, my office, my prayer closet as “The Gap!” I have a sign on the door. This is to remind me of one of my main functions as a believer.
Paul said in Romans 15:30-31, “Strive together with me in your prayers to God for me; that I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judea.”
Of all of your prayer activities, this aspect of prayer known as Intercession will require you to do some homework, time of preparation, for you to be most effective as an intercessor. First, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you seek to know what and how to pray. Make yourself aware of what is going on in your family, church, community, nation and world. Find reliable news sources. Follow mission activities and needs. Make yourself an on-going list of persons who need salvation. I receive dozens of prayer requests per day from Face Book alone.
When you make it known to God that you desire to be His intercessor, He will give you plenty of opportunities to pray. Pray On!
