Matthew 5:25a-b (NKJV): Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him,
Jesus is reminding us here that if we did wrong, we need to seek forgiveness and repent as soon as we are aware of the wrong. He is encouraging us that we need to do what we can to restore the relationship.
It starts with Repenting with God first. Why? Because when our Relationship with Him is right, then our relationships with others will be right.
So many think that repenting is just saying sorry or paying for damages. Repentance is so much more. It is not only saying sorry, paying for any damages but it is also making an honest effort on making it right and not repeating the wrong. If all we do is say sorry every time we are wrong, would others believe us? After a while, it just becomes words. We have to show change.
Jesus’s warning about doing this quickly is also beneficial to the one you wronged. This helps them to not resonate in anger. It also shows them that because of your Relationship with Jesus, there is a change in your life. Your different from others. The Holy Spirit is Working in you. This helps them to see that there is a God Who Truly Works in our lives if we are Following Him.
Can you imagine what our lives would be like if all of us truly tried to rectify what we did wrong? We need to remember that when we meet people, we do not always know what they like or not like. With some things, it could take years, if we ever find out, before we know certain things offend them. This is why we should be earnest in making our offenses right. After all, we all have been offended at least once in our lives, if not more. We know from our experiences how one feels when they have been offended.
Making right our wrongs, repenting, diffuses the anger one might have for us. God even has talked about The Anger He has for those who sin. He knows that we will mess up but gave us a way to turn back.
