An illegal horse-racing operation in Valencia County, drawing up to 500 people on a bi-monthly basis, has been shut down by Homeland Security and New Mexico police.  The operators, Anselmo Renova, and Susan Renova, have been arrested and can be charged with illegal commercial gambling.  Alcohol and illegal drugs were also reported to be conspicuous in the operation.  The investigation had been ongoing for over a year, but it is unclear how much money was being made on the operation.

Stop Predatory Gambling New Mexico is mainly at work trying to close down government supported legalized gambling in the state, but this article points out that legalizing gambling does not mean that illegal gambling is going to disappear.  It appears that the illegal races were drawing crowds comparable to the state approved tracks.  The gambling industry and their lackeys usually introduce legalized gambling in a state, saying that it will eliminate illegal gambling. That has never proven to be the case.

The proper action would be to criminalize all the government sponsored gambling and then close them all down. An article in the Republic can be opened by clicking here.
