“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4)
“The valley of the shadow of death;” this certainly speaks of that last journey which all earthly humanity must traverse; death. It would also apply to the shadowy road one travels approaching pending death. But, you know what? I believe this statement of hope most likely applies to any type of distress one finds in life. Therefore, “I will fear no evil!” Why?
“For Thou art with me;” for the believer, this speaks of the precious, comforting, powerful, Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is a personal friend; a forever presence and an unlimited power. In this world, there is a devil to be fought throughout the believer’s life; and Satan will fight.
However, there is the Holy Spirit Who will control the fight; Who will fight through us and for us; Who has never known defeat. He is the Spirit of Jesus, the Victor over the devil. He is always with us, but we are strongly encouraged “to walk in the Spirit”; “be filled with the Spirit.” He is the power. That’s where our victory over evil is won!
