When we offer up praise to the Lord, He reveals His character traits and attributes to us.
How has the Lord revealed Himself to you? Have you met Him as your Savior? Deliverer? Healer? Provider?
The Lord is all of those and more! All throughout Scriptures, we see various names for the Lord. Those different names for God reveal His traits to us so we can get to know Him better.
Some days I praise the Lord by calling out His names and who He is. Let’s look at some of the names of God, what they mean, and the Scripture reference.
Elohim – The Creator
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).
In the Hebrew, the name for God is Elohim. The name is a plural name which indicates that the Holy Trinity—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit—were present together at creation.
Yahweh – The Self-Existent One
“And God spoke to Moses and said to him: “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name Lord I was not known to them” (Exodus 6:2-3).
The Hebrew name YHWH is translated in most English Bibles as LORD (small caps). He is the I AM.
El Elyon – The God Most High
“Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: ‘Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.’ And he gave him a tithe of all.” (Genesis 14:18-20)
God is Supreme and above all things.
El Roi – The God Who Sees
“Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, ‘Have I also here seen Him who sees me?’” (Genesis 16:13)
God sees all the affairs of His people and knows all that takes place in His creation. He sees you!
El Shaddai – God Almighty
“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.’” (Genesis 17:1)
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)
God is all-powerful! Nothing and no one is more powerful than El Shaddai.
Yahweh Rapha – The Lord that Heals
“And said, ‘If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.’” (Exodus 15:26)
Our God is our Healer!
Yahweh Yireh – The Lord Will Provide
“Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, [a]The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, ‘In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’” (Genesis 22:13-14)
God will provide for all of our needs.

- Jehovah Nissi: The Lord’s Banner of Victory
- Jehovah Shalom: The Lord Our Peace
- Jehovah Mekadesh: The Lord Who Sanctifies
- Jehovah Tsikenu: The Lord My Righteousness
- Jehovah Robi: The Lord My Shepherd
I encourage you to do a study on the names of God. Today I want to leave you with one more name for our God…
Abba – Father
“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba,Father.’” (Romans 8:15)
“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’” (Galatians 4:6)
When we receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, we are adopted into the family of God. God becomes our Father.
Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed by Your name” (Matthew 6:9).
When we praise Him and exalt Him for who He is as our Father, He meets us at our point of need. Whatever you have need of today, just begin to praise Him! He is ready to meet you there.
