Police Rule Shooting on Don Gaspar as a Murder-Suicide

Santa Fe, July 12, 2019 – Following the completion of forensic autopsies by the Office of the Medical Investigator today and an assessment of the crime scene, Santa Fe Police is ruling yesterday’s shooting on Don Gaspar as a murder-suicide. Detectives learned Jessie Saucedo, 34 , shot Ernestine Saucedo, 32 , twice in the upper chest area with a semi-automatic pistol as she sat in the front passenger seat of the BMW sport utility vehicle.. Mr. Saucedo suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head as he was seated in the driver seat of the vehicle. The suspected firearm was located and seized from inside the vehicle. Although legally married, Mr. and Mrs. Saucedo had not been living together in the same residence for several weeks. With Mr. Saucedo being identified as the suspect in the murder of Mrs. Saucedo, Police maintain their position that no suspect remains at large.

The victim of the shooting, Mrs. Saucedo, is a state employee and well-known local singer, performing under her maiden name Ernestine Romero. This tragic, heartbreaking incident has shaken our community and personally affected many. We ask the community to keep the families, friends, and co-workers affected in mind as we collectively process yesterday’s loss and begin the journey towards healing from this senseless tragedy.

The incident remains under active investigation as Detectives continue to determine what led up to this tragic incident. As additional information becomes available it will be provided.

Such a tragedy……here is the statement issued by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham:

“Today we experienced a horrific tragedy in Santa Fe. My heart is broken for the family and loved ones of the state employee who was tragically and violently taken from us too soon. I am grateful to Santa Fe law enforcement for their quick response and I want every state employee to know that we are here to support you through this trying time.”
