In the Lord I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain.”
Psalm 11:1
When life gets hectic or difficult, we sometimes wish we could just escape and get out from under the pressure. Someone once told David, “Flee like a bird to your mountain.” And we want to flee too! We want to flee the pile of bills, the irritating coworker, or the relentless grind of some chronic health issue. We might find temporary escape in a novel or movie, but sooner or later reality intrudes again. We really can’t escape from our problems. But here’s the good news: We can’t escape from our God, either. The psalmist David wrote, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7).
Your situation won’t change by wishing it away. But the very heart of your reality is that You have a God who loves you, who is present with you, and who has both the willingness and the power to help you face every challenge in your life.
Lord, I don’t have to run away to the mountains to seek refuge, because You are my Refuge. You are My Mighty Rock. And You are always with me. I don’t have to seek You in some foreign land or exotic temple. You have made Your home with me. Forever!
