Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
Psalm 27:14
In the classic devotional book Streams in the Desert, L. B. Cowman made a fascinating observation: “Waiting on God brings us to our journey’s end quicker than our feet.”* In other words, if we want to get to the end of something quickly, then our best hope and solution are to check in with God.
Today’s Scripture puts it so well: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” There is no shortcut in life that will get you to your goals and heart’s desire more quickly than putting your trust in Him. To wait for the Lord means to not rush ahead and not make rash decisions. It means refusing to settle for something satisfactory when something great is right around the corner. To wait on the Lord shows you are thinking of Him first. The Creator of time knows better than anyone how to maximize it.
I know, Lord, there are moments to get up and get moving—in Your timing and at Your direction. But I’ve wasted too much time rushing ahead on my own, trying to arrange life on my own terms. Instead of saving time, I’ve lost it—and found myself miles from the goal. Today, I will wait, watch, and listen for You.
