From Pastor Dewey:

To please God is why I live!

My life verse: “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” -Acts 20:24

Live to Please God

by Joni Eareckson Tada

As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.

1 Thessalonians 4:1-3

Today’s Scripture tells us that we should live “to please God” and that “it is God’s will that you should be sanctified.” The word sanctified means “set apart from sin.” That’s a tall order for any of us. But it is doable. Of course, this doesn’t mean we will never sin or stumble—because we certainly will (James 3:2; 1 John 1:8). But it does mean that as our walk with Christ progresses through the weeks, months, and years, we will be less and less inclined in that direction. To accomplish this, you have help from out of this world! You are not alone in your struggle. God has placed within you His Holy Spirit, who empowers you to make choices that please God. When you obey the Lord, your focus isn’t on some arbitrary list of do’s and don’ts; it is on Jesus. You find yourself obeying because—first and foremost—you really do want to please Him.

Dear God, I want to fill my vision with You. I pause now to let my thoughts linger on who You are in Your kingly majesty…right at this moment…in the splendor of heaven…surrounded by angels and redeemed men and women from all ages. How good, how right, and how fitting it is to consider You and worship You!
