The Significance of Praying Psalm 91

One of the enemy’s tactics against believers is fear. He uses fear that something bad will happen to us, whether it is a tragedy, natural disaster, financial difficulties, disease, or anything else.

Bad things do happen in our fallen world. Jesus said we will experience trials, but we can be courageous BECAUSE Jesus conquered the world (John 16:33).

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

So if Jesus is life and He has conquered the world, how does that protect us against tribulations?

We pray the Word of God. Jesus is the Word. This is so powerful. Look at John 1:1,

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God” (NLT).

When we pray the Word, we’re applying Jesus to our situations.

The Word of God never returns void and accomplishes what God sent it to do (Isaiah 55:11).

And Psalm 91 is a psalm of safety and protection. Here is a brief explanation of key verses in Psalm 91 which comes from the book by Peggy Joyce Ruth, Psalm 91: God’s Umbrella of Protection.

Verse 1: The secret place is a personal and intimate relationship with the Father.

Verse 2: We must speak or say God’s word, not just read it and think about it. Speaking the Word builds our faith (Romans 10:17) and it activates the angels to work on our behalf (Psalm 103:20).

Verse 3: The enemy knows what types of snares will hook us and those are the traps he sets against us. But God will deliver us from those, both spiritual and physical.

Verse 4: We find shelter under His wings, much like baby chicks find shelter under the wings of the mother hen.

Verse 5: We are protected both throughout the day and throughout the night.

Verse 6: Pestilence represents plagues, viruses, and other type of disease outbreaks. Destruction represents natural disasters such as tornadoes and hurricanes, terrorist acts, accidents, and economic crisis.

Verses 7-8: We will live among destruction and will be ones to help others in a time of need sharing the love of Christ.

Verses 9 – 10: Dwelling or tent represents our household that is protected by the Most High.

Verses 11-12: The angels work for us.

Verse 13: The enemy is under our feet as we operate in the authority Jesus granted us.

Verses 14-16: God speaks directly to us with His promises to deliver us, reminding us that we are seated with Christ (Eph 2:6), God answers us when we call out to Him, He rescues us, He honors us, gives us long life, and shows us His salvation which when you look this word up in the Hebrew or Greek means—health, healing, deliverance, safety, protection, and provision!

So now pull out your Bible, open to Psalm 91, and pray it out loud. Change the pronoun “you” to “I” if you’re praying for yourself, or change “you” to the names of people you are praying for.

In Appeal to the Courtroom of Heaven: Petitions for Prisoners and Prison Families I share my unexpected prison family journey testimony. I also point out how the Lord redeemed the worst-of-the-worst offenders found in the pages of the Bible and explain an effective prayer strategy I learned from this experience.

I pray my transparency and vulnerability points to the source of HOPE for those who lost hope in the midst of despair.
